(A montage of photos from the Salvador Litvak film Saving Lincoln starring Tom Amandes (as President Lincoln), Lea Coco (as Ward Hill Lamon), Penelope Ann Miller (as Mary Todd Lincoln), Creed Bratton (as Senator Charles Sumner), Saidah Arrika Ekulona (as Elizabeth Keckly), and Bruce Davison (as William H. Seward).
Humbling. Whenever I'm asked what it was like to step into the over-sized shoes of our 16th president, that's the word that comes to mind. His words, of course are indelible; subtle and plainly profound. Like the best of Sandburg's poems. But even more, his actions. To be willing to lay so much on the line - the Union, untold lives, including his own and his family's - all for the sake of one unshakeable truth: that every man, woman and child must live free, and that our Union would not stand for anything less - a huge, mountainous task. And one Lincoln approached with dogged determination and, ultimately, deep humility.
How could I approach the task of portraying him with anything but the same?
Now he belongs to the ages... Saving Lincoln, 2013
